Kaliningrad's Museum of the World Ocean is a distinctive place to spend an enriching day. Its valuable exhibits explore maritime history, with extensive collections of mollusc shells, ship models, marine animal skeletons, graphic art and images of the seas.
The historic fleet is a particular attraction. These vessels once travelled to different parts of the world's oceans, sometimes on dangerous and unpredictable voyages. Highlights include the Kosmonavt Viktor Patsayev and Vityaz vessels, submarine B-413 and fishing trawler SRT-129. Visitors can admire them from the shore and also take guided tours on board.
If you think the museum is only for adults, your young explorers will miss the chance to feel like real seafarers.

Only a few small brick structures remain of the old warehouses. Some now house individual exhibition spaces. The museum retains the spirit of Konigsberg through its old railway bridge, quay and cobbled paving.

In 2004, residents and visitors gained access to the museum's main exhibition, World Ocean: A Touch. It features numerous ship and mollusc exhibits, aquariums with predatory fish and a huge sperm whale skeleton, now one of the museum's best-known displays. The top of the lighthouse offers fine views of the Pregolya River.

The vessel travelled over 800,000 nautical miles across the world's oceans. A bathyscaphe launched from it reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench, more than 11 km deep. Visitors can learn about sailors' lives and explore the cabins, bridge, engine room and other parts of the ship.

The research vessel Kosmonavt Viktor Patsayev belonged to the Soviet space fleet and now supports satellite flights, continuing to provide communications with the ISS. Submarine B-413 survives in its original condition as an authentic reminder of the country's pre-nuclear fleet.

Most visitors come to the Museum of the World Ocean in summer, but its annual Herring Day food festival takes place in spring. It attracts more than 10,000 guests from across the country, with herring and other traditional local dishes to taste.
