About the museum

Kaliningrad is known for its sights, and the Amber Museum is one of its highlights. It is one of the few museums in Russia dedicated to the beauty of this honey-coloured stone. Experts estimate that Yantarny, a village in the Kaliningrad Region whose name means amber, holds up to 90% of the world's amber reserves. Kaliningrad's museum was created to showcase this local treasure, the sun stone. It occupies Dohna Tower, a building with a rich history, still surrounded by a moat. Its inner courtyard has a fountain and benches.

The collection contains over 16,000 exhibits. Discover how amber formed, its value, extraction methods and the polishing process. A dedicated collection of inclusions features ancient lizards, mosquitoes and flies preserved in amber. One of the museum's most memorable exhibits is a gemstone weighing more than 4 kg.

History

1812

The tower was named after Count Karl Friedrich Emil zu Dohna-Schlobitten, who commanded a hussar regiment during the war of 1812.

Mid-19th century

Dohna Tower was built in Konigsberg as a substantial red-brick Neo-Gothic fortification, forming part of the city's defensive system.

1970s

A new chapter began as the tower was restored and adapted for use as a museum. Restoration included its facades, interiors and surrounding grounds.

1979

On 29 December, the Amber Museum opened in the restored tower. Its displays explored the origins, extraction and processing of amber, and objects made from this sun stone.

What to see

Amber in nature

The first part of the exhibition explores amber as a natural material, with examples of different colours, sizes and transparency. One particularly impressive specimen weighs 4.3 kg. Inclusions have a special place in the collection: pieces preserving fragments of ancient plants and animals from around 9–10 million years ago.

Amber through history

The second part of the collection shows how people have used amber over the centuries. It features jewellery and everyday objects, including archaeological finds from the Neolithic period and the 2nd–5th centuries AD.

Best photo spots

Marshal Vasilevsky Square offers an excellent view of Dohna Tower. The courtyard's fountain and Gothic architecture make another atmospheric setting, while a small bridge beside Upper Lake provides a further lovely photo spot.
