Amalienau is considered one of Kaliningrad's oldest districts. Founded in the early 20th century according to the garden city concept, it combines urban amenities with a spacious, country-like setting. Originally, only wealthy residents could live here. Construction began on
Kutuzov Street, where the first luxurious villas were built for comfortable living.
Amalienau retains its pre-war atmosphere. Many of its historic mansions bear the names of their former owners. Central Park is a wonderful place to relax, stroll, ride the Ferris wheel or enjoy a meal in one of its cafes and restaurants.

Amalienau developed rapidly, with standard houses built alongside luxurious villas. Many mansions took their owners' names and later became important historic buildings.
By a fortunate coincidence, the district escaped most of the destruction of the Second World War, preserving much of its historic architecture.

More than ten luxurious villas can be seen here. Only some remain privately owned; others house businesses and public institutions. One contains the Gaidar Library, while another is a kindergarten.
By a fortunate coincidence, the villas suffered little damage during the Second World War. One housed the Japanese consulate during the conflict.

Stroll through the park beside Poplavok Lake, known as the Twins before the war. Its distinctive feature is a pair of ponds divided by a man-made embankment planted with trees. Elegant villas also line the lake.

Lithuanian Square has a monument to Ludvikas Reza, the Lithuanian poet, philologist, translator and Protestant pastor. A monument to Baron Munchausen is another favourite photo spot. The district's churches are also local landmarks: the Gothic St Adalbert's Church and the church dedicated to Queen Louise.

The district's scenery and sights are beautiful throughout the year. Amalienau is particularly popular in October, when autumn colours fill its streets. Nearby Luisenwahl hosts the annual Kaliningrad City Jazz festival, bringing together jazz lovers from across the country.
